Founded in 1890, Kwekwe was built on gold. A white prospector pegged the ancient gold-workings shown to him by a local, and since those early days, chrome, iron and lime have also been mined. Kwekwe was so named because of the song of frogs that serenaded along the river banks. These days, the town pulses to the metronomic sound of industry.

Kwekwe, also Que Que, city, central Zimbabwe. It is a commercial and manufacturing center situated on rail and road lines midway between Harare and Bulawayo. Established in the early 20th century, the settlement developed first as a center for gold mining and later became a processing center for iron and steel and chromium.

 

The three blue lines represent the Kwekwe, Bambezaan and Sebakwe rivers. The globe symbolises the gold mine, which is situated between the Kwekwe and Sebakwe rivers. The mortar and pestle represent the early prospectors and small workers. The sword is the sword of Justice and the plough represents agriculture.
