The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority
(TAZARA) is a rail link of the Southern African
Regional Transport Network. It covers a total distance
of 1860 Km from the Sea Port of Dar es Salaam in
Tanzania to New Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia. The railroad is
designed with a 1067-mm gauge, which allows through
traffic operations with other Southern African Railways.
It has a designed capacity of five (5) million tones of
freight per annum. TAZARA has been currently
handling traffic for the Democratic Republic of Congo,
the Republic of Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa
and part of the Great Lakes Regions. |

Focus |
|
It is the policy of the company to
ensure that a customer must be given the best service
required. We will endeavour to provide the expected
services to customers all the time so that our business
relationship could be strengthened. Timely information
will be given to customers when it is needed. Consignment
and wagon movements information is computerize, using
the Advanced Cargo Information System.
For Importers and Exporters of cargo,
a special Freight Clearing and Forwarding Unit of TAZARA
offers such services, working hand in hand with Customs
Officials. In order to meet customer requirements, TAZARA
operates train services tailored to meet Customer
Specifications. One of the popular services is System or
Block Train. Customers with bulk traffic are encouraged
to utilize this service.

| Freight
Operations |
|
TAZARA operates several train
services meant to meet different customer requirements.
The system / Block Train Services gives individual
clients with bulk traffic on timetable with a view to
suit their business requirements. TAZARA has adequate
security systems to ensure the safety of cargo while in
transit. All traffic conveyed by TAZARA is at all times
escorted by armed personnel as well as strict
accountability by all handling crews.

| Transit
Time |
Rates |
|
TAZARA ensures that to move traffic to
and from the Sea Port of Dar es Salaam to New Kapiri
Mposhi takes a maximum of 5 days only. The aim of the
Authority is to further cut down the number of transit
time from 5 to 3 days transit between the two points.
|
We offer competitive rates depending on
the volumes of cargo a client has and open for
negotiations leading to rebate and contract rates.

| Equipment |
|
The General Purpose Wagons are suitable
for bulk traffic and packaged products. These wagons are
in the range of high and drop sided open to bottom
offloading hoppers. They have the capacity to carry up to
50 metric tones.

Flat Wagons:
These wagons are ideal for containerized traffic
including machinery, spare parts, motor vehicles and
hardware.
Refrigerated Wagons:
These are basically ideal for perishable commodities
like meat, fish, milk and vegetables. The total carrying
capacity is approximately 25 metric tones. These wagons
can be hired or leased out to customers. The perishables
can be consigned as ordinary parcels between Dar es
Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia.
Covered Wagons:
These wagons are ideal for products such as maize,
sugar, beans, tea, coffee, cement, etc. The security of
cargo is guaranteed. If a customer makes arrangements,
wagons can be locked and keys retained by the customer
until when the consignment reaches its intended
destination.
Tank Wagons:
The Tank Wagons are suitable for carrying various types
of petroleum products and other vegetable oils. A good
number fleets of tank wagons are leased from
Malawi Railway to carry bulk liquids from the Port of
Dar es Salaam to Malawi Cargo Centres in Mbeya.

| Cargo
Terminus |
|
TAZARA has a modern Dry Cargo Terminus, with complete
facilities at New Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia. The objective
of the terminus is to serve both Importers and Exporters
from D.R. Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
It has a Gantry Crane, capable of handling about 800
metric tones of cargo and its 24 hours operational.
Customers can load and off-load their cargo at New
Kapili Mposhi quickly and efficiently with the
installation of the facilities. The other Centres
with similar facilities are found in Dar es Salaam,
Makambako, Mbeya and Kasama

| Joint
Operation |
|
TAZARA is working closely the the Tanzania Harbour
Authority Port Officials as well as the Tanzania Revenue
Authority to ensure the processing and handling of cargo
documentation is streamlined and speeded up. This
joint operation also facilitates the fast movement of
transit goods. No storage or demurrages charges are
incurred if Port and Freight Charges are paid promptly.

| Passenger
Service Operations |
|
We operate 5 frequencies of Passenger Trains from New
Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam and vice/versa. Two
are through trains, starting off every Tuesday and Friday
from New Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia and Dar es Salaam in
Tanzania simultaneously. Ordinary Trains run every
Monday, Thursday and Fridays, each terminating at Mbeya in
Tanzania from Dar es Salaam and Nakonde in Zambia except
for the Friday Ordinary Train which goes up to Dar es
salaam from New Kapiri Mposhi and vice versa.
TAZARA recommends its Express train services for
international passengers. Each train if provided
with First Class Coaches, two dinning cars and five third
class coaches.
The Express Trains takes 37 hours to reach Dar es
Salaam from new Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia. The First
and Second Class coaches have sleeping facilities in
compartments accommodating 4 and 6 passengers
respectively.
Beddings are provided free of charge to first and
second class compartment passengers. Passengers can
take a shower on board for upper classes. There is
also a Lounge car where customers in the upper class can
watch films and enjoy cold drinks and liquor while
relaxing. It has also piped music in all
compartments.

| TAZARA's
Future |
|
1995 marked the new era where the Authority repositioned
itself into a market-oriented institution through
commercialization of all business activities. The
new TAZARA is divided into two cost and profit centres and
three business units. The main objectives of the
restructuring was to respond and suit the business
environment that centres on customer relationship
management.
