About Us

Formed in 1998, Mwanka Rura Development and Environment Foundation is a local Non-Government Organization specialized in Rural Economic Development such as sustainable Agriculture, Forestry, Water and Wildlife Management. 

It focuses to improve the Economic and Social well being of the rural population through Agriculture activities and Community based Nature Resources Management as a way of reducing poverty.  Mwanka Rural Development and Environment Foundation take into consideration the cross-cutting issues such as HIV/Aids, Gender, Good Governance, and Poverty alleviation in executing the development acctivities.

Mission

Mwanka Rural Develpoment and Environment Foundation Missio Statement is to support the improvement of local Institutional capacities to deliver sustainable quality basic services, enhanced and improvement of the socail welfare of women, children, vulnerable groups, orphans and elderly living primarily on Agriculture and Communal Nature Reserves.  All the Foundation activities target the rural poor and  marginalized groups. 

The foundation program and projects have common themes of empowerment, creating opportunities to access productive resources, participatory approaches and building capacities for development management.

Experience

Mwanka Rural Development and environmental Foundation is made up of members who have a lot of experience and qualifications in Rural Development and Natural Resources Management.

Training will be carried out in groups, which will be formed by the Foundation Facilitators during the implementation of the project.  The purpose is to indtroduce the "handover the stick" type of system in the project areas.  The second approach will be to develop instruments, which will be used by the Foundation Facilities  and community structures.

Experience In Natural Resources Management and Income Generation

The Foundation has a team of varsity - experienced staff who has carried out various Community Based Natural Resources Management assignments in the country Assignments include Community Based natural Resources Management Programe in Eastern Province where local communities were being organised in groups and involved in out grower schemes, small credit scheme, conservation farming, best farming practices, management of forest resources on sustainable basis and other business activities conducted by rural groups.  The team also gave local communities training skills in group formaion, action planning and vision setting, budgeting and auditing.

Capacity Building

The foundation as mentioned above has managed several training programmes for small-scale farmers, beekeepers, business enterpreneurs who have become successful.  The Foundation also develop strong network among these groups and between them and the business houses and marketing institutions.  The training focused at establishing strong community institutions that are able to management for example. community natural resources; prepare business plans, rural credit shemes, marketing community development projects and community groups in Eastern Province.

Foundation Activities

The Principal Areas Of Support Are:-

  • To provide technical support in ormof Capacity Building to local Communities in sustainble Agriculture Production methods, Marketing, Bee keeping and Mangement of Natural Resources.

  • To conduct environmental Impact Assessments for Developmental Projects, Community Needs Assessments and Training Needs Assessments for Institions / Organiztions involved in Rural Developmental activities.

  • To prepare Business Plans for Small Scake Enterprises as well as Participatory Natural Resource Management Plans, and

  • To link Small Scale Farmers and Entrepreneurs to Markets and Rural Credit Facility Institutions.

  • To provide market for beekeeping products

  • To provide training in crop storage and crop marketing.

  • Community mobilization and Group Dynamics

  • Monitoring and Evaluation of grassroot level projects

  • Institutional capacity building and development of community based natural resources management training modules

  • Strengthening linkages between small-scale farmers and business enterprises and micro-project financing agents.
