Background

Radio Maria - Zambia was established to announce the conversion by propagating the Catholic Faith through the radio.  Radio Maria gives people an authentic word; a word which builds not destroys; which gives confidence to fearful hearts; a pure, simple word; which announces truth.  This word on Radio Maria os the Message of salvation.  It is Christ himself.  Radio Maria seeks not only sinners but saints as well.

The background of Radio Maria finds its originality from the diocesan pastoral program.  Apart from the name connoting being religious per se, its operations are also solely in the hands of the community and it leaves to serve the entire community.  The Diocesan community as a way of implementing the African Synod of Bishops of Africa felt the need to have the radio station that will be able to answer the life questions of the people's faith and development,  It started its serious test transmission on June 21st 1999.  The Broadcast license from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services was issued to the radio in November 2001.  The Officail Launch of the radio was on Saturday 11th May 2002 at Radio Maria premises.

The Community activites are always recorded and the community is able to evaluate the productions on the radio.  Radio Maria Chipata is among over 30 Radio Maria stations in the world.

Activities

The radio has established over 40 Communication Teams or clubs around the province.  The Volunteers from the station travel to these places to share with the people the charisma of Radio Maria.  It is also an opportunity for people to be part of the radio and do programmes that answer their life questions.  This activity is also helping the radio do many promotions for the radio in different places.  Plans are underway to expand the number of these clubs so that more promotions are done and that more people should have a voice, as radio Maria is voice of the voiceless.

Future Plans

The radio hopes the ministry will give further permission to expand to areas not reached by Radio Maria.  These areas include Nyimba, most of Petauke, Lundazi, Chama and others.  If the radio can reach that far end, it is hoped that more souls will be reached by proclaiming conversions for the salvation of souls.

Ultimately, Radio Maria’s plan is to go national with time and the ministry’s permission, and hence and name Radio Maria-Zambia.

Support

Even if the radio is independent and should be self-sustaining, time and again the radio gets some support from the Diocese of Chipata where necessary, as it is the brain-child of the Diocese.

Donors of the equipment from Italy, The World Family, time and again support the radio.  This is through the required things for the day-to-day running of the station, although the trend will stop as the community take full control of the radio and support it.
