  Introduction

Asphen Engineering Services (AES), a Division of Asphen Investments Limited, specializes in Repair and Maintenance Welding. Motivated by a quest and passion to satisfy customer needs, AES has taken the challenge to combat industrial waste of worn machine parts and equipment, through the use of repair and maintenance welding techniques and processes.

A typical example of a reclaimed worn screw conveyor, which was destined for the scrap heap, was refurbished using a weld protective coating to the contoured surface of the screw blades. This process prolongs the life of the part by 300% and is cost effective to both the client and the production process as a whole.

What an enormous amount of industrial
waste of non-renewable resources!!!

One of the criticisms future generations may level at our contemporary society, is that it tolerated such an enormous amount of waste. Within the last decades, most modern industrial nations could well be characterized as unworthy stewards of their own, as well as the world’s natural resources. Industry has reached a point where each technological advance brings new problems. For example, automation, despite the obvious benefits of increased productivity and reduced production costs, etc. - enormously increased the cost of down time, if the equipment fails. With the advent of the integrated process industries, the consequences of part wear are far more serious. The accelerating rhythm of productive activity puts increasing strain on machinery and equipment, thus distorting design performance and causing premature wear and damage to the parts. The scrap piles have become our monuments to waste.

Welding Challenges

Production / fabrication welding generally is done under optimum conditions. The specifications are set, the appropriate equipment is provided for, the chemistry of the base metals is known, the parameters are readily controlled and / or controllable, and if necessary, prototypes can be made and subjected to destructive tests to confirm physical properties of the welds. In contrast, maintenance and repair welding presents wide disparities compared to production or fabrication welding. Operating problems involve a host of unknowns, restraints and limitations.Welding alloys have to possess special features to overcome handicaps of field welding.Maintenance welders have to contend with other factors such as poor design of parts, which failed in service, modifications of parts in the field and older equipment subjected to stresses by production demands, which exceed the original requirements.

The AES approach to Repair and Maintenance

Welding Challenges

  • AES has adopted the Eutectic + Castolin approach to maintenance and repair welding technology - the AES team of welding specialists have over 50 years combined experience in repair and maintenance welding with a solid Eutectic + Castolin foundation.

  • The AES team has been trained and tested to high standards in preventive maintenance and repair welding processes.

  • Coded Welders: - AES has a good team of coded welders employed in the welding of x-ray quality pressure vessels and tanks.

  • Consultancy Services: subject to availability AES Technical Staff may be hired to supervise weld reclamation work by its customers.

  • Collaboration: AES collaborates closely with Alfred H Knight in pre and post weld defect detection, failure analysis and weld quality examinations and evaluations.

  • Labour Hire: AES runs a skilled and semi skilled labour hire service in plumbing, electrical, rigging, plant fitting, and boiler making and welding.

Specialist welding processes: in order to select the most suitable processes and alloy for any given application, it is necessary to fully understand the mechanical and chemical actions that are the cause. AES has at its disposal a repertoire of special welding processes and alloys specifically formulated for prolonging the life of machine parts.

Some of the processes are: Please Check Below...

  Eutalloy

The Eutalloy Process utilizes a specially designed oxyacetylene torch to aspirate and propel powder alloys onto a base metal. It is a one-step process, whereby the spraying and fusion occur simultaneously.  All Eutalloy deposits are metallurgically bonded.

The Eutalloy Process provides the welder with the capability for depositing a wide range of alloys with unprecedented precision (as thin as 0.003”) and the ability to control the shape of the build up with accuracy.

  Teromatec

Teromatec - semi automated open arc equipment. The feeder design achieves the highest rate of deposition using specially - manufactured tubular continuous electrodes packaged on coils.

Recommended for broad area overlays such as crusher rolls, gyratory cones, buckets etc.

  Roto Tec

The Roto Tec Process metal spraying system allows the operator to restore worn bearing surface areas of thousands of parts (rolls, shafts, journals, packing glands and seals) back to dimension with extraordinary reliability. Because of the unique exothermic reaction of the bond coat powder (Ultrabond), all Roto Tec coatings are metallurgically bonded in the “as sprayed” condition. By eliminating the need for any extra “fusion” heat, the temperature of the work-piece need never reach more than 250o C.

The advantage of Roto Tec coating is based on its ability to withstand metal-to-metal frictional wear conditions. As such, Roto Tec repaired parts when returned to service, can be expected to far outlast the original part.
