The Department participates in national
education programmes, including the development of
curricula, standards for education and examinations and
manages all public schools and provides funding to
independent schools and section 21 schools. Management of
public schools include the provision of physical facilities,
such as school buildings, learner and teacher support
material. The Department is responsible for over 74 000
teachers and more than 5 500 schools.
In addition the Department works to
increase the literacy and empowerment of adults through the
Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) and Further
Education and Training (FET) programmes.
