The Department participates in national education programmes, including the development of curricula, standards for education and examinations and manages all public schools and provides funding to independent schools and section 21 schools. Management of public schools include the provision of physical facilities, such as school buildings, learner and teacher support material. The Department is responsible for over 74 000 teachers and more than 5 500 schools.

In addition the Department works to increase the literacy and empowerment of adults through the Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) and Further Education and Training (FET) programmes.

The department participates in Art and cultural activities with the intention of developing their acceptance and assisting artists to become commercially viable.

Sport

The Department participates in national and local sports programmes to develop excellence and achievement in support principally in KwaZulu-Natal but coordinated with other provinces in South Africa.
