RUNDU TOWN COUNCIL

Rundu is the capital of the Kavango Region occupies a lovely setting on the bluffs above the Kavango River over looking Angola.  It is a region capital and administrative centre.  Rundu have 50 000 inhabitants.  It is a great spot for fishing and birds watching along the river.  The economy is dominated by the retail trades, informal business and tourism.  All road traffic from eastern Angola, Zambia, Northern Botswana and Zimbabwe routes through Rundu to reach the Capital City Windhoek and the port of Walvis Bay.

 

THINGS TO SEE

It is worth visiting the Mbangura Wood Carving’s Co-operation which is part of a Government Development Scheme Marketing traditional drums and lovely hand made furniture.  There is Kavango Museum at Sambyu 30km east of Rundu is a Roman Catholic Mission Museum which exhibits Crafts and Woodcarving from Angola and Kavango.  Rundu Town is having a Zoo Park along the lake Newa.

 

INFORMATION

Rundu’s privately run tourism centre distribute brochure, answers queries and books hotels and Safari’s, it sells Kavango Curios and offer car hire, phone, fax, photocopy services and overnight vehicle lock-up.

 

ORGANISATION TOURS

The tourism centre can arrange various bookings for activities such as canoeing.  Rubber ducking, horse riding, biking as well as sightseeing and sundowner cruises along the river.

 

PLACE TO STAY

 
  • The Rundu services centre beside the Hunters Tavern at the shell services station has uninspiring rooms with fan air-conditioning, accommodating up to four people
  • The Omashare River Lodge with the best sunset view perches above the river 1 km west of the centre.  Basic single double self-catering bungalows, with air-conditioners, TV and self-catering breakfast supplies.

  • A newly established lodge in Rundu Town situated in lush gardens overlooking the Kavango River, surrounding wetland Angola and indigenous forest Ngandu Safari Lodge makes a perfect home away from home and the friendly staff will attend to all your wishes.  The Ala Carte restaurant, bar swimming pool, curio shop Laundromat and leisure equipment provides all derivable convenience.  The large African style and central situated Ngandu Safari Lodge has different types of accommodation varying from luxury to standard Bungalows and suit with aircons and TV, camping site is also available.

  • Friendly German Portuguese run Sarasungu River Lodge occupies a shady riverside selling 4km from the centre authenities including hot showers, great restaurant specializing in pizza, a c veranda and swimming pool, canoes for pottering around on the river.
  • Kaisosi Safari Lodge down stream start riverside camp has single double bungalows and camping site, can be arranged river raft cruiser transfer from the airport.
  • Valerie and wynan pipers Nkwazi lodge which is named which is named after local Chief the man without front teet is used for overland truck groups Bungalows with suite facilities two to four-bed bungalows with shared facilities dormitories and camps, transferable form town.
  • Mayana Lodge 21 km east of Rundu serves as Police camp during the war for independence.  It is set in a leafy grave beside the Kavango and affords excellent sunrise views.  Four a beds hut with communal ablutions with private facilities.  There is a Carte restaurant which is recommended.
 
ENTERTAINMENT

Rundu Beach the most beautiful and popular bay for entertainm,ent during the weekend most used during Christmas and New Year compare to Swakopmund beach and Walvisbay.  Rundu’ most popular nightspot is the pleasantly integrated Sauyemwa Night Club beside a tree sporting coloured lights in the Sauyemwa suburb, south west of town.  Gambling house and New world in central Rundu on Weekend, it rocks all night including Casa-Mourisca.

 

THINGS TO BUY

The Kavango people have developed woodcarving skills and arguably produced Namibia’s finest wood work animal figures, masks, wooden mags for beer, walsing sticks and boxes are carved in the light wildteak hardwood and make excellent sourvenirs.  Along the road to Grootfonteing people sell toy trucks, airplanes and helicopters.  The San people sell craft work mainly bows, arrows, quivers and ostrich eggshell necklaces.

 

GETTING TO RUNDU AND GET AWAY RUNDU

Air Namibia flights to Rundu is suspended however minibuses and star line runs from Windhoek via Grootfontein to Rundu proceeding to Katima Mulilo and Victoria Water falls, chartered aircrafts can also be hired.
