It
is a historic Town known by many people who live in
the four Northern Region i.e. Omusati Region, Oshana
Region, Oshikoto Region and Ohangwena Region.
It was established as a missionary centre in
the 1840’s. Later it serves as an administrative
seat of the South-Africa Colonial Administration.
It was a recruitment centre for all Ovambo
people who went to work in the South of the country on
a contract labour system. All people used to go
through Ondangwa in order to look for employment in
the southern Towns, including South Africa mines in
the 1950’ and 1960’. It was a place where all
people have to gather to be recruited to work in the
farms or in the mines in the southern part of the
country.
From
1970’s the town was mainly used as a strategic
location and administration centre for the South
African Defence forces up until independence.
Ondangwa
was an Administrative centre up to 1991 for the
Government until 1992 when new Regional structure was
designed by the Government at independence The Town
was proclaimed as a town in 1992 under the Ministry of
Regional Local Government and Housing and become an
autonomous town in 1998.
The
town have 7 elected councilors and between 57-60 staff
members headed by the CEO.
