Background |
|
Bank
Windhoek embraced its social responsibility with
the establishment of the Bank Windhoek Social
Investment Fund in January 2002. The Social
Investment Fund forms part of the Bank’s corporate
social investment activities. |
| |
|
Vision |
|
The
vision of the Social Investment Fund is “to make a
meaningful contribution to the sustainable
development and prosperity of the communities in
which we operate through social investment”. This
statement is a commitment to our country and
understanding the needs of the communities. The
Social Investment Fund is funded by an annual
allocation by the Board of Directors. A committee
representative of the Board of Directors and
Executive management meets on a monthly basis to
review applications and discuss the progress of
current projects. Bank Windhoek’s contribution to
the Social Investment Fund is not limited to a
monetary contribution by the Board of Directors,
but is a combination of funding and the sharing of
skills and resources of the Marketing and
Corporate Communication Services Department. |

Focus Areas |
|
The
two focus areas of the Fund, being Job Creation
and Education, ensures that a focused approach is
taken in supporting projects in all corners of the
country. The alignment of the Fund’s focus areas
with Government’s national priorities ensures that
a foundation is built for partnerships between the
bank and the Government. Our objective is to be a
catalyst for sustainable development and poverty
alleviation and to address the social challenges
that impact negatively on socio-economic
development; by creating educational opportunities
for communities, addressing unemployment and
stimulating economic growth. |

Programmes |
During the period
June 2002 to June 2003, the Bank Windhoek Social
Investment Fund invested and committed over N$1,8
million in various job creation and education
projects in amongst others Windhoek, Keetmanshoop,
Mariental, Gobabis, Ondundu, Kombat, Okakarara,
Ondangwa, Swakopmund, Aminius and Walvis Bay.
During this period, strong emphasis was placed on
Entrepreneurial Skills Training with various
workshops presented to young learners as well as
to unemployed youths with a Grade 12
qualification. A first for Namibia is the
presentation of Entrepreneurial skills training to
inmates of the Windhoek Central Prison, in
partnership with the Ministry of Prisons and
Correctional Services. The integration of
entrepreneurial skills into the formal school
curriculum, as recommended in the Report of the
Presidential Commission on Education, Culture and
Training has also been a key focus. The Social
Investment Fund and the Ministry of Basic
Education, Sport and Culture has signed an
agreement and formed a steering committee on
Entrepreneurship development to ensure that
entrepreneurial skills are integrated in the
formal school curriculum.
Special projects of the Social Investment Fund
includes the annual Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple
Project, (N$300 000 was raised for the Cancer
Association in 2003) and the Bank Windhoek Golf
Day in aid of welfare that raised a total of N$97
500 for four welfare organizations in 2003.
Building long-term partnerships and relationships
with the communities we serve and our stakeholders
are a key focus for the Social Investment Fund.
