TIL Courses

Automotive Mechanics

The Automotive Mechanics Department is a very popular study for many students.  This three year course combines classroom study with actual work on cars in the motor mechanics garage we have on campus.  Students help provide various services to customers who need work done on their vehicles.  Students are encouraged and assisted in finding attachment in their third year of schooling to obtain experience which is highly valued by employers.  Many students are actually offered jobs by the businesses they work for during their attachments.  Once students pass the National Craft Exam, they receive a certificate which is valued in Lesotho and all surrounding Southern Africa countries.

Building

Building Department offers an intensive two year study of building, including basic and technical mathematics and Technical Drawing.  Students study theory as well as often work on actual customer jobs.  This allows them to not only study the trade of Building, but also gain practical on-line-job experience.  Once the student has passed the National Crafts Certificate, they can expect to find work throughout the country of Lesotho, as well as the surrounding African countries.

Carpentry and Joinery

This is a two year study in all aspects of the trades of Carpentry.  Wood-working and Joinery.  Students study Craft Theory, Trade Calculations and Technical Drawing.  This enables students to Cost and Price contracts as well as develop entrepreneurship skills and also to interpret, produce and details plans and diagrams.

Some students even find part-time work and experience with Building firms.  Students also take a tour of other trades schools and lumber mills in Swaziland.  Students get to work and put into practice what they learn in the classroom in the workshops.

The equipment and machinery in the workshop is state of the art, including a sliding table saw, lathe and spindle moulder which has self – propelled rollers.

The workshop is also equipped with a dust extraction unit which keeps the place very clean.  The institutes workshop makes furniture and goods to sell to customers.

Customers are give the choice of selecting from a variety of items the department can manufacture.  Once students pass the National Craft Certificate, they will have quality knowledge and first hand experience in carpentry, woodwork and joinery.

Electrical Installations

Electrical Installations is one of our more popular courses.  This is a three year study in the theory and training for electrical installations.  An in-depth study of theory combined with hands on training ensures that the students will have the necessary skill set to obtain work after passing the National Trades Certificate.  Students are encouraged and assisted in obtaining attachment in their third year of study.  This provides the students with first hand experience in their trade.  The Electrical Installations Department also combines basic business studies as part of the curriculum. This gives students an introduction to bookkeeping, entrepreneurship and an idea of how to obtain capital to help students find jobs or start their own business after obtaining the National Trades Certificate.

Leatherworks

This department offers two years of training on the use of hand tools for leatherwork.  Actual customer services are performed and many of the crafts the students make are sold to customers for money to the school.  Students are also taught some basic business management skills such as how to cost, price, sell and keep records for their work.  After completion of this course some students often open and run their very own leatherwork businesses.  Students also get the benefit of performing customer services such as saddle repair, shoe mending and sandal making.  The class size is typically small, allowing each student to receive specialized one-on-one training from the instructors.
